With this in mind, Alta decided it was time to instigate a more focused discussion on corner design, through a lens of finding strategies that work for all users. Alta’s newest white paper, Corner Design for All Users, offers a collection of innovations in the design of intersection corners in a way that balances the need to accommodate large vehicles while providing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. HMB is a premier provider of engineering services primarily focused on state and local agency clients in the transportation, water and environmental markets. Headquartered in Frankfort, Kentucky, HMB has also offices in Lexington, KY, Nashville, TN, New Albany, IN, Montgomery, AL, and Marianna, FL.

Understanding the Science: Exploring the Basics of Climate Change

Replica’s data on land uses and trips allowed Alta to develop an understanding of what mobility activity looks like on a typical day in these areas. Mobility hubs can also be a first, low cost phase for testing mobility options and iterative placemaking and investment. The elements of sidewalk design include transportation, “outdoor living room” amenities and utilities.

Our Services

Their Civic Analytics team works with transportation professionals across the USA and Canada to help communities use data to inform how investments in human-scaled transportation can help advance multifaceted community goals. Alta works to mitigate climate change and advance safety and social justice through sustainable mobility. We connect people to places by providing solutions across the disciplines of planning, design, engineering, education and encouragement programs, and community engagement. Lidet Bayou is a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, where she studied Urban Studies and minored in Architecture and Sustainability Studies. Through her studies and past work experiences, she has gained hands-on experience in transportation planning and community engagement with local government agencies and non-profit organizations in the Twin Cities.

Founded in 1976, Waggoner has a proud history of delivering infrastructure solutions, with a focus on the Water market. They share a common vision with Trilon in that they do more than plan and design infrastructure – they help transform communities. Hubs range from simple co-location of several modes (e.g. bus stop, private shuttle stop, bike share station, and bicycle racks) to larger districts where land uses, infrastructure and mobility options (existing and emerging) are strategically planned together.

Alta found that the City of Toronto’s Curb Radii Guideline to be among the most flexible and forward thinking policies across Canada and the US. The document dictates the allowable turning paths for large vehicles based on the context of the intersection, and sets an upper corner radius limit of 15 metres (49 feet), above which special approval is required. In addition, the City of Toronto provides a map of large truck turning volumes at every intersection in the city, to reduce the need for on-site data collection. Alpine Investors is a people-driven private equity firm that is committed to building enduring companies by working with, learning from, and developing exceptional people. Its PeopleFirst strategy includes a talent program which allows Alpine to bring leadership to situations where additional or new management is needed post-transaction.

MSG is a premier multi-disciplined consulting firm, serving an exclusive collection of the some of the best and fastest growing private entities, municipalities, and governmental agencies across the Americas. With Replica data, Alta developed an interactive map that shows the origins and destinations of bicycling and walking trips, as well as trips less than three-miles-long that could conceivably be served by walking, bicycling, or other micromobility options. “Combining the trip and land use data, we’re able to see that people are walking in rural areas, challenging assumptions about where the needs are for pedestrian infrastructure,” lead project planner Maria Wardoku says.

Truck aprons must balance challenging objectives and finding which designs perform better is critical for moving toward a future standard. For example, an early theme that emerged in our case studies is that significant vertical profiles (5 inches [13 cm] or higher), are much more effective at deterring passenger vehicles than ones that are flush with the pavement or lower. In one case study, mountable aprons built to a 2 inch (5 cm) height had to be rebuilt to 6 inches (15 cm) because passenger vehicles were turning over them.

Like any harmonious family, we have a shared vision, shared values, and share our services to better support our clients. We make decisions in the best interest of the entire family and support each other to grow in both good and challenging times. Detailed mobility data makes it possible to understand where walking and cycling happens today — and where new investments could prompt even more of it. Policy dictates what a local jurisdiction finds “acceptable” in terms of corner design and when trade-offs are permitted.

She desires to learn more about the intersection of technology, policy, and planning to promote a greener future. Teresa aspires to bring her data analytics experiences to Alta and learn how geospatial data science can improve urban infrastructure and decision-making, while also ensuring civic engagement and equity. As an avid user of shared bikes and e-scooters during her travels around the world, she is looking forward to acquiring knowledge from micro-mobility and active transportation projects and further solidifying her data analysis skills. Maisie MacNaughton has joined the Alta Canada team as an Engineering Intern based in Toronto, ON for the next 16 months. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto, where she has resided her entire life.

Alta Planning + Design, a sustainable transportation firm with offices across the US and in Canada, has acquired UrbanTrans North America, a transportation planning and behavior change firm. Teresa Chang is a Master of City Planning candidate at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering from National Taiwan University, where she discovered her interest in climate change and sustainability.

Soozy is a Master of Landscape Architecture student at Cal Poly Pomona, holding an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. During her time completing her engineering degree at San Jose State, she realized her desire to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between people, nature, and engineering systems. She possesses a strong passion for fostering environments where individuals and the environment can flourish harmoniously. A key aspect of this is enhancing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in urban areas to promote increased access to both active transportation and green spaces. Soozy aspires to apply her interdisciplinary skills at Alta, while also acquiring knowledge of sustainable and human-centered design principles. Portland, OR – August 24, 2022 –  Today Alta Planning + Design, Inc. (Alta) announced a strategic partnership with Trilon Group (Trilon), a family of infrastructure-focused businesses.
